| BRRR, IT'S CHILLY OUTSIDE: Create a winter cocoon
The term "cocoon" is defined as a protective case or covering. Safety may be sufficient for a butterfly, but humans want more than simple protection through the winter. We want warmth, comfort, even a bit of luxury. My decorating partner, Matt Fox, and I are big fans of cocooning and have developed a plan for it. How do you create the perfect winter retreat? As with most decorating projects, it's best to begin with the focal point. For anyone trying to escape the winter chill, the focal point is clearly the fireplace. Nothing says warm and cozy like a fire. To make optimal use of your fireplace, consider rearranging your furniture. Place sofas and chairs so they create a warm area for conversations and reading. Rethink the function of certain pieces of furniture.
Was it police racism?
The police report says an officer pulled Tiffany Boddie over after she did not stop at a stop sign. The officer later discovered her license was suspended and that she was driving without proof of insurance. According to the report, the officer asked her to contact someone to pick up her 8-year-old-daughter - before the elder Boddie arrived. The report also stated the officer asked Marva Boddie to put the child in the car so the little girl wouldn't see her mother being handcuffed. In the end, the granddaughter stayed with the elder Boddie, who bailed her daughter out of jail. Marva Boddie said she didn't file a complaint with the police because she didn't think anything would be done about it. She said she thought she'd have more luck with the citizens group. The Spellers Tim and Barbara Speller say the case involving their daughter Erin last August was one of mistaken identity.

Santa Cruz County sued over big-home ordinance
Two parties have sued Santa Cruz County over rules passed last month curbing development of large homes on ocean cliffs. Lawsuits filed last week by Barry and Susan Porter, who own property on Pleasure Point Drive, and Sea for Yourself Partners LLC question if the county conducted sufficient environmental review before declaring property owners could not count the ocean, beach and cliff faces as developable land. Under previous rules, developers generally couldn't build on these features, but could count the areas toward total developable square-footage of their lot. The more square-footage deemed developable, the larger the home that was allowed. "I don't believe that it's proper that a community makes this kind of law without following environmental procedures, which have been put in place for the protection of the community and the environment," Susan Porter said.
